Arusha National Park is one of northern Tanzania’s most scenic and diverse safari destinations, located just a short drive from Arusha city. Although smaller than many of Tanzania’s famous national parks, it offers an impressive combination of mountains, forests, lakes, volcanic landscapes and abundant wildlife.

The park is dominated by Mount Meru, Tanzania’s second-highest mountain, which rises dramatically above forests and open landscapes. Its lower slopes provide excellent opportunities for walking safaris, wildlife viewing and photography, while adventurous visitors can also climb Mount Meru for spectacular views across the surrounding region. Another major attraction is the Momella Lakes, a group of shallow alkaline lakes surrounded by green hills and wildlife-rich habitats. The lakes attract many bird species and are particularly known for flamingos. Canoeing on the lakes offers visitors a peaceful way to experience the scenery and observe wildlife along the shoreline. The Ngurdoto Crater, sometimes compared to a smaller version of Ngorongoro, provides beautiful viewpoints over forests, swamps and grasslands. Buffaloes, warthogs and occasionally elephants can be seen within the crater area. Tanzania Parks

Arusha National Park is especially famous for its black-and-white colobus monkeys. Visitors may also encounter giraffes, buffaloes, waterbucks, bushbucks, hippos, baboons and elephants, while leopards occur but are rarely seen. Its rich variety of habitats also supports exceptional birdlife. Tanzania Parks

Because of its proximity to Arusha, the park is ideal for day trips, short safaris and travelers beginning or ending a northern Tanzania safari. Its peaceful atmosphere, dramatic Mount Meru scenery and wide range of activities make Arusha National Park an excellent introduction to Tanzania’s natural beauty.
