Udzungwa Mountains National Park is one of Tanzania’s most important biodiversity hotspots and one of the most rewarding destinations for hiking, primate watching and nature-based adventure. Located in southern Tanzania, the park forms part of the Eastern Arc Mountains and is known for its lush forests, dramatic peaks, waterfalls and rare wildlife.
The park is especially famous for its rich primate diversity. Visitors may encounter the Udzungwa red colobus, Sanje crested mangabey and several other monkey species found in the forest. Some of these primates are endemic to the region, making Udzungwa particularly important for conservation.
One of the park’s signature attractions is Sanje Waterfall, a spectacular multi-tiered waterfall reached by hiking through tropical forest. The trail offers beautiful views over the Kilombero Valley and gives visitors a chance to experience Udzungwa’s rainforest environment up close.
Unlike Tanzania’s traditional safari parks, Udzungwa is explored mainly on foot. Hiking trails range from shorter forest walks to more challenging mountain treks, making the park ideal for active travelers, photographers and nature lovers.
The park is also home to an impressive variety of birds, butterflies, reptiles and plants. Its combination of lowland rainforest, montane forest and mountain habitats makes it one of the most biologically diverse protected areas in Tanzania.
For travelers looking to add hiking and rainforest exploration to a Southern Circuit safari, Udzungwa Mountains National Park combines perfectly with Mikumi, Nyerere and Ruaha.
