Tarangire National Park is one of northern Tanzania’s most distinctive safari destinations, famous for its enormous elephant herds, ancient baobab trees and the life-giving Tarangire River. Located southwest of Arusha, the park offers excellent wildlife viewing in a beautiful and relatively peaceful setting.
The Tarangire River is the heart of the park and becomes especially important during the dry season, when wildlife from surrounding areas gathers near its permanent water sources. This concentration of animals creates exceptional game-viewing opportunities, with elephants, zebras, wildebeest, giraffes, buffaloes and many antelope species often seen in large numbers.
Tarangire is particularly renowned for its elephants. Large family groups can frequently be seen moving through the open savannah, gathering at waterholes or walking beneath the park’s iconic baobab trees.
Predators are also present throughout the park, including lions, leopards, cheetahs and spotted hyenas. During the dry season, predator activity often increases as prey becomes concentrated around the river and remaining water sources.
The park is also a paradise for birdwatchers, with a rich variety of bird species living in its woodlands, swamps, river valleys and open plains. Combined with its dramatic landscapes and fewer crowds than some neighboring parks, Tarangire offers a rewarding and authentic safari experience.
For travelers exploring Tanzania’s Northern Circuit, Tarangire National Park is an ideal destination for wildlife photography, elephant encounters and classic African scenery.
