Mount Meru is Tanzania’s second-highest mountain and one of the country’s most rewarding trekking destinations. Rising above Arusha National Park, this dramatic volcanic peak offers a quieter and more scenic alternative to Mount Kilimanjaro, with beautiful forests, wildlife-rich lower slopes and breathtaking views from the summit.
The climb usually begins inside Arusha National Park, where trekkers may encounter giraffes, buffaloes, monkeys, warthogs and a variety of birdlife before reaching the higher alpine zones. The route passes through montane forest, open moorland and rugged volcanic terrain, making the trek both diverse and visually impressive.
One of Mount Meru’s most striking features is its huge volcanic crater and ash cone, visible from the upper sections of the trail. As climbers approach the summit, the narrow crater rim provides dramatic views across the landscape, especially at sunrise.
Mount Meru is also widely used as an acclimatization trek before climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. Its steep ascent, high altitude and multi-day itinerary help prepare trekkers for more demanding mountain expeditions while still offering a memorable adventure of its own.
From the summit area, visitors can enjoy spectacular views of Mount Kilimanjaro, Arusha National Park and the surrounding plains. For hikers, photographers and adventure travelers, Mount Meru combines wildlife, volcanic scenery and mountain trekking in one of northern Tanzania’s most beautiful settings.
